Preliminary hearing for Gibson vehicular manslaughter trial continued

The preliminary hearing for the manslaughter trial of Dillon Gibson has been continued until July 21.

Dillon Gibson is charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene after the car he was allegedly driving crashed into a Blackfoot home and caused a fire. The fire ended up killing William K. Hong who lived in the home.

“The continuance was based upon defense counsel as well as the state awaiting the pathology report, from the pathologist in Boise, as well as the Fire Marshall’s investigation and accident reconstruction,” said Bingham Prosecutor Cleve Colson.

Judge Ryan W. Boyer, who was filling in for James H. Barrett, granted the continuance.

The defense also asked for a bond reduction – from the $250,000 set fee – so Gibson could be with his family before the trial. State prosecutors argued against the bond change because they believe Gibson is a flight risk. Judge Barrett did not grant the bond reduction but it is still subject to change.

Lastly, the prosecution added two new charges during today’s hearing.

“In addition to [the original charges], we motioned to amend the complaint to add two misdemeanors for the damages done to the fence and playhouse, as well as the house next to the initial house that took the impact,” said Colson.

Gibson will be back in court July 21 at 11 a.m.
