Chubbuck Police use Taser to stop man with sword

A Chubbuck man is in jail for causing a disturbance and holding a sword aggressively.

According to Chubbuck Police, Jared Whitaker is being held on charges of Aggravated Battery on a Police Officer, 1 st Degree Stalking, Battery on an Officer, Resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Police said the man was banging on a neighboring trailer and acting aggressively toward others in the trailer park.

When police arrived, he was verbally aggressive toward the officers, however he did return to his home, they said.

The officers remained in the area and a short time later, Whitaker came out with a samurai type sword. He went to a nearby trailer growling and again acting aggressive, they said.

Officer’s ordered him to drop the sword. He refused. An officer close to him was able to grab the man’s arm and tried to stop him. He resisted and at one point struck an officer with the butt end of the sword, police said.

Three officers tried to subdue him with their Tasers. It wasn’t until a Bannock County Sheriff Deputy arrived to use a Taser were they able to place him in custody.

They said the incident was extremely dangerous, but the officers handled it exceptionally well. It shows an example of officers who are will to place themselves into harm’s way to protect the community and our residents, they said.
