Miles Canyon fire near Montpelier controlled

The Miles Canyon fire was declared controlled at 8 p.m. Saturday. The 56-acre fire, approximately 3 miles west of Ovid and 2 miles south of Liberty, Idaho was contained at 9 p.m. Friday.

The Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center is working to contain the Miles Canyon fire nine miles west of Montpelier and two miles southwest of Liberty, Idaho.

The fire was officially estimated at about 15 acres at 4:30 p.m. It started on private land, but threatened BLM and Forest Service land. The area is known to local residents as “Mill Canyon”.

The fire center has committed one helicopter, five engines, and overhead retardant tankers. Additional tanker trunks have been ordered.

Firefighters estimated they would have the fire contained by 9 p.m. Friday.
