Ketchum woman rescued after 60 foot climbing fall

A Ketchum woman is recovering at Wood River Medical Center near Hailey after a climbing accident north of the Devil’s Bedstead Peak.

Custer County Search and Rescue was called out at 3:30 p.m. Monday after receiving a 911 call from 25-year-old Avery Shawler. She fell 60 feet down a rock chute, suffering several lacerations and broken bones.

As she was going into hypothermic shock, Shawler was able to find one bar of cellular service to call for help. She covered herself in an emergency space blanket and awaited rescue.

While ground crews were being assembled, 2 Bear Air Rescue helicopter service from Kalispell, Montana was called to assist.

By 5 p.m. the helicopter was on the scene and hoisted Shawler into the helicopter.
