Burnout planned on Maple Fire Thursday

Firefighters plan a burnout on the Maple Fire east of the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park Thursday. Ignition of fires is likely to begin in the afternoon when fuels are dry enough to carry a fire.

Smoke is expected to be visible in the Madison Junction area and is likely to drift into West Yellowstone overnight and Friday.

The objective is to remove unburned fuel and prevent uncontrolled spread of the fire toward the town of West Yellowstone now and into the future.

Firefighters have scheduled a community meeting at the LDS Church, 245 Faithful Street, in West Yellowstone at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

On the Buffalo fire lines, firefighters are continuing to work in the Slough Creek area to prevent the fire from crossing the Slough Creek trail. Firefighters are continuing to monitor the Fawn, Central, and Jasper fires. The fires have not increased in size for the last few days, but continue to smolder and creep.
