Ford TriMotor airplane visits Idaho Falls

Aviation history is in Idaho Falls for the weekend. On Thursday, the Eastern Idaho Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association brought in the first ever mass-produced airliner to the Idaho Falls Regional Airport.

“To take them back in history. To see what aviation was like back in the day,” said volunteer EEA pilot John Maxfield.

It’s a Ford TriMotor 5-AT plan, nicknamed the “Tin Goose.” With cushioned seats for comfort and big windows for great views, the TriMotor was the first of its kind — and those that came to fly in it Thursday afternoon really enjoyed the ride.

“Mostly for the history of the plane, and then just get to ride a plane that old. It was a beautiful experience up there. It’s very loud — wear earplugs — but it was fun!” said rider Stacey Watson.

We flew at 90 miles per hour and 1,000 feet in the air above Idaho Falls. It was easy to look out, because each seat is a window seat and each seat is an aisle seat.

“Flying in the Ford TriMotor is a unique experience because it’s like time travel. It’s something that you have to experience to fully realize,” said Maxfield.

The aircraft will be here all weekend for the public to fly in at the Idaho Falls Regional Airport. Flights are available Friday through Sunday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets are $75 for adults and $50 for kids.
