Southern Yellowstone entrance evacuated and closed because of fire

The southern entrance to Yellowstone National Parkwas closedagain Sunday evening after the Berry Fire moved back toward the road.

Fire activity increased at the Berry Fire Sunday. Heavy smoke and falling trees in the area prompted the closure of areas from the southern Yellowstone entrance to the Lizard Creek Campground on Highway 89/191/287.

National Park Service staff housed at the south entrance were evacuated to Grant. All employees were evacuated safely and all are accounted for.

Lewis Lake Campground is still open and can be accessed from the north. Only visitors going to Lewis Lake Campground or backcountry trailheads along the park road will be allowed to drive south of the Grant intersection.

The Berry Fire is now 20,801 acres. Three engines and several rangers are on site at the Berry Fire to assist with protecting structures and public safety. One crew and engine fightingthe Maple Fire were also brought into assist.
