17th Street crash kills two women

UPDATE 9/19/16 2:15 p.m: Nicholas Perea, 20, of California is now being held on $50,000 bond on two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter.

Perea appeared before Magistrate Judge Mark Riddoch in Bonneville County Monday on a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. Prosecutor John Dewey, however, sought the more serious charges.

Perea was ordered to appear for a preliminary hearing on October 5.

Update 12:00 pm: 20-year-old Nicholas Perea bonded out of jail Monday morning on a bond of $300. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon for charges of reckless driving. The crash he was involved in caused the death of two women Sunday.

20-year-old Nicholas Perea of California was booked into Bonneville County Jail for reckless driving. In a press release, IFPD said additional or amended charges are pending prosecutor review.

Two women died from their injuries at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Saturday evening.

Witnesses told police Perea was driving westbound on 17th street at approximately 60 miles per hour. Police said another driver was driving southbound and attempting to entering into the intersection of 17th street and Curtis avenue when Perea collided with them. Perea attempted to stop to avoid crashing into the Buick, but was unable to stop.

The crash is still under investigation.
