Students prep for voting on election day

Students at Bonneville High School are doing their part in getting ready for this year’s presidential election.

“We’re training students in the high school to learn how to vote. We want to give them the opportunity to pre-register, so when the election day comes, they can go to the polling offices and they can vote right away. And we just want them to be aware of who’s running for the different positions,” said Brianna Maestas, Bonneville High School’s National Honor Society president.

Maestas is going to government classes to teach high school seniors how to vote. She and government teachers go through registration and the voting process. Maestas even had sample ballots to pass out getting the students familiar with what they will be using to cast their vote. She wants to make sure she is sending the message that voting, even at their young age, is extremely important.

“As citizens, we want to exercise our rights and we want to vote. We want to have a say in what’s happening. Starting at an earlier age is just going to (make you) better off when you’re older. The process is going to be easier,” Maestas said.
