Plastic surgery trends growing

A new report finds more Americans are putting their backsides to the front of the line when it comes to plastic surgery.

According to the latest data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons butt implants and lifts are now the fastest-growing types of plastic surgery in the United States.

According to the ASPS, there were 15.9 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in 2015, 2 percent higher than in 2014.

Doctor Mark Freeman who has been practicing for 10 years and said he didn’t see this trend of surgery coming.

“I think there’s been a lot of celebrities that have had this done and I think that’s fueled the fire for the Gluteal Augmentation. But I will say at first I didn’t understand it but after doing a large number of them, you realize that with age the buttocks do begin to sag and drop. And putting a little of the patients fat at the top of the butt does result in a nice shape,” Freeman said.

There are two types of Gluteal Augmentation procedures, one is implant based and the other is where they use the patients own fat and inject it back into the backside.

Doctor Freeman said, “Nationwide Gluteal Augmentation was not very popular back when we were just using implants that’s because of the high rate of the extrusion which means the implant eventually works its way out. So very few plastic surgeons would do that because of the risks involved. But now with the new Brazilian Butt Life Procedure where you take the patients fat and process and inject it back into the backside. The patient gets a nice result without worrying about extrusions or those types of complications.”

Doctor Freeman said nationwide people will pay somewhere between $7 to $8,000 all the way up to $13,000 and it depends where and how it’s being done.

The procedure can take up to 3 or 4 hours or can be as quick as 2 hours.

Freeman said the typical patient he see’s here in Idaho is usually a mother whose looking for a lift. He also said in the past years he’s performed a number of Gluteal Augmentations and the number is growing.

“We get two to three calls a month about this procedure. But I’m sure if we were in Miami, Florida we would get 20 to 30 calls a month. I think in Idaho we are just a more conservative state and I think things take a little while to catch on,” Freeman said.

There are risks to having Gluteal Augmentation, if not done by an accredited surgeon a person can end up with a botched procedure.

“But if this procedure is not done well it’s nearly impossible to correct. When you inject fat into that tissue it’s permanent and you cannot go in and smooth it out after its finished,” Freeman said.

The ASPS said the top procedures related to the rear end in 2015 were: buttock augmentation with fat grafting (nearly 15,000 procedures, up 28 percent from 2014); buttock lift (almost 4,800 procedures, up 36 percent from 2014), and butt implants (more than 2,500 procedures, up 36 percent from 2014).

Doctor Freeman said about 60 to 70 percent of the fat injected in the backside will stay around, so keeping it up isn’t too costly.

“It’s something you will have to do once or twice,” Freeman said.

Fat grafting has been performed on breast cancer patients for years, the ASPS is doing a study on the long term affects on what these fat grafting procedures have, “So its important not to get too crazy with it because we don’t know all the risks with it.”
