Fire departments team up with Dominos to promote fire safety in homes

The Pocatello and Chubbuck fire departments are teaming up with both Dominos and the National Fire Protection Association to promote fire safety in homes.

It’s in conjunction with fire prevention week, which is Oct. 9 through Oct. 15.

Dominos will be selecting a delivery customer’s order at random. That customer will have their pizza delivered by the fire department. Firefighters will check to make sure the home’s smoke alarms are working and are not outdated. If it all looks good, the order is completely free, courtesy of Dominos.

If it’s not working, firefighters will change out the batteries or even put in a whole new alarm, free of charge.

“Fire safety has always been something near and dear to Dominos so it was just a natural fit,” said Robert Meyer, franchise owner for the Pocatello and Chubbuck Dominos. “I think it’s fun and we’re glad to be a part of it.”

The NFPA recommends changing your smoke alarms every ten years to keep them current and functioning. That’s why this year’s theme for fire prevention week is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”

Kim Stouse, community education specialist with the Pocatello fire department, said most smoke alarms have the manufacturing date on the back of the alarm. If it’s older than 10 years, it should be changed out.

Stouse said it’s a great reminder for people to know how important fire alarms are.

“Two-thirds of all home fire deaths are from homes that don’t have working smoke alarms,” Stouse said. “So if we have a time of the year that we can really focus on getting the message out there, getting people to check their smoke alarms, then it makes it that much safer for our community.”

The Pocatello fire department will be doing the campaign again on Friday. Meyer said the Chubbuck fire department will be doing it Wednesday, Thursday and Friday also.
