Karole Honas traces family history
Local News 8 anchor, Karole Honas traced her ancesty back to the 13th century with the help of a family history specialist. The public will be able to get the same kind of help at a free event on Saturday, October 22.
The Free Family Discovery Day enables the public to trace their ancestry and find famous ancestors.
The Family Discovery Day will be held for the community to help people find out more about their ancestors and their heritage and take home a free family tree chart.
Advances in technology are making it easier to discover more about our family history.
There are a variety of websites that are available, free of charge, that allow individual’s access to family tree information, historical records and other documents that are considered by many precious findings that give them a feeling of belonging.
At the Family Discovery Day that will be held from 10:00 am to 3:00pm at the LDS chapel on the corner of Sunnyside and Holmes, there will be over 15 stations using online and other technologies to help us discover more about our family history. A few stations include:
The use of online programs that will allow you to print a fan chart displaying up to 9 generations of ancestors.
A website that will explore your pedigree and identify what famous people you may be related to and how you are related.
A mapping program that charts the travels of your ancestors from their native lands to America.
Identifying and downloading apps for smart phones to conveniently refer to family tree information on the go.
The event, sponsored by the Idaho Falls South Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is open to the public to come and explore the various stations. There will also be children’s activities that include creating an old fashioned doll, learning how to churn butter, and more.
