Madison school teacher dies while hiking

Salmon Search and Rescue recovered the body of Madison High School teacher Larry Prescott Sunday morning, after a snow storm impeded their efforts Saturday night.

According to the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office, Prescott was hiking with Brigham Young University-Idaho student Thad Davis in the Kiln Canyon area of Lemhi Range on Saturday. Prescott began to to complain about breathing difficulty before collapsing. Davis hiked five hours to get cell service and dialed 911.

The sheriff’s office, Salmon Search and Rescue, Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Flathead County, Montana Search & Rescue Crews responded to the call. Search efforts had to end at 10:30 p.m, but resumed at 6 a.m. Sunday.

On their Facebook page, the Madison School District called Prescott a “dedicated, passionate and talented educator.” It also posted information for a GoFundMe to help the family, you can find it here.

The school district also posted information for students who might need help to process or cope with Prescott’s death. You can find that info here.
