Bannock Star shines again

After years of not being turned on, the star formerly on the Bannock Regional Memorial Hospital was re-lit Wednesday.

The Portneuf Health Trust moved the Bannock Star from the hospital to the top of its parking garage at 500 S. 11th St. The star was on the hospital for at least 50 years.

Many long-time Pocatellans at the re-lighting ceremony had fond memories of the star and many said it was a big symbol for the community’s holiday spirit.

“The star kind of meant the start of the holiday season,” said Portneuf Health Trust CEO Shaun Menchaca. “Seeing the star lit up is pretty exciting and very rewarding.”

A contractor was hired to refurbish it. One big change made to the star is its lights. Its neon lighting has been replaced with LED lights that are also energy efficient.
