Fiber optics installation inside homes underway

Four homes are connected to the city of Ammon’s fiber optics system on Thursday after the first home was connected on Monday.

These first homes are being brought online slowly as the installers look for bugs in the software and hardware.

“It’s a little slower paced than probably what we would’ve liked. But as you’d expect, it’s a brand new system. So when you build a brand new technology system, as you start to turn things on, and you start to run things, you find the bugs that you have to fix,” said Bruce Patterson, the city of Ammon technology director.

The fiber wiring has been installed to about 76 Ammon homes. Wiring installation is suspended for the season, but the city will install little by little depending on the weather. The city expects to get around 75 homes online over the next couple of months.

This is a brand new system, so the city is still trying to work out the kinks but is very proud of the progress they have made.

“So we found a few of those, and we’re working on those. But I will say this, we have a fabulous group of people in the city of Ammon that we’re working with, and everybody has been very patient with that. And that’s a big thing I’d like to say. I’d like to tell our residents, ‘Thank you.’ They’ve been patient with us as we go through their yards, as we go down their streets,” said Patterson.
