One person tests positive for tuberculosis at ISU

The Idaho State University Health Center confirms at least one person has tested positive for tuberculosis.

It is not known how long the person has been infected. The person was a worker at the Early Learning Center but has not been on campus for ten days. The illness wasn’t diagnosed until Tuesday.

Health Center Director Dr. Ronald Solbrig said the infected person is not noticeably ill or showing any symptoms.

He said the patient has been in contact with approximately 48 other people. They have been notified.

Southern Idaho Public Health is investigating the case. Those who have come into contact with the person are now waiting to be tested.

Epidemiologist Jeff Doerr said those people will undergo a skin test. If, after 48 to 72 hours they test positive, they will undergo a blood test and X-ray.

He said the risk to the general population is very low and that the main risk was to the 48 individuals who had close contact with the patient.

Those with concerns may call the health district office at (208) 233-9080 or visit their website here.
