Yellowstone to open for winter season

Yellowstone National Park is opening its roads to the public for snow vehicle travel this week.

The Billings Gazette reports that starting Thursday, visitors can travel the park on commercially guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches from the north, west, and south entrances or on noncommercial guides with the proper permits. The park’s east entrance over Sylvan Pass isn’t scheduled to open until Dec. 22.

Park officials are reminding winter guests that unpredictable weather can lead to sudden road closures or delays with little or no warning. Visitors should dress appropriately for the cold weather and carry emergency survival equipment.

Most stores, restaurants, campgrounds, and lodges are closed during winter, but a few businesses will open this week.

Yellowstone also offers winter park visitors activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
