Truck overweight by 18,000 pounds crashes into snow, trees

A driver is facing more than $1,000 in fines after a potato truck that was overweight by about 18,000 pounds left Teton Pass and crashed.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide reports the truck trailed potatoes in the snow Thursday as it went over a guardrail on Highway 22 and rolled 200 feet down an embankment.

Highway Patrol Lt. Matt Brackin said 31-year-old driver Brigida Zelaya was stuck in for about an hour.

She was sent to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

Brackin said out-of-state drivers are often cited from November to April for ignoring a ban on these types of trucks driving Teton Pass.

Authorities cited Zelaya for the overweight truck, ignoring the seasonal truck restriction and failing to maintain her lane.
