Community College signatures get approved for ballot

Voters may get the chance to decide on a whether to change Eastern Idaho Technical College into a community college.

The Bonneville County Elections office has certified 2,852 signatures on a petition organized by the group Citizens for Affordable Higher Education, said Steve Taggart, spokesman for the group. He said that is roughly three times the 1,000 signatures required.

The petition now will be sent to the State Board of Education which must certify the need for a community college, Taggart said.

The measure then would come back to the Bonneville County Commissioners to place the issue on the ballot.

They expect the measure to be on the ballot in May 2017.
