Idaho gas tax above national average

Tuesday is Tax Day but if you fill up your car regularly, everyday is Tax Day, according to Gas Buddy.

Here’s why:

Motorists spend $198 million a day on gas tax.

Idaho is one of 19 states that has gas taxes above the national average of 50 cents per gallon. Idaho sits at 51.40 cents per gallon.

Petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan said when it comes to sales tax, you can actually see the amount you are being taxed but with gas, you really do not know how much you are being taxed.

“It kind of highlights that without those gas taxes for example, Idaho’s state-wide average today is $2.49 per gallon. If gas tax was not factored into that, the average price would be under $2.00 per gallon,” DeHaan said. DeHaan said overall, the southern states like Arizona, Texas, Tennessee and South Carolina have the lowest national rates.
