UPDATE: Lockdown at Sugar City schools over, one person detained
Update 2:00 pm: The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has released additional details about today’s incident.
At about 11:40 am the sheriff’s office recieved a call from a man stating his name and an address where he had three hostages at gunpoint and also said he had a bomb. The sheriff’s office responded to the area and created a perimeter at the location and notified schools to shelter in place.
By 12:30 the sheriff’s office determined that the owner of the home in the call was safe, no was being held hostage and there were no explosives at the location. No others people were found at the location. Madison County Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by Fremont County Sheriff’s office, Rexburg Police Department, Idaho Falls Police Department’s Regional Bomb Squad and Idaho State Police.
The threat is still under investigation by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Update 1:15 pm: The lockdown at Sugar City schools is over and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office says the incident that started the lockdown has been cleared. Schools are back to normal operations and residents are no longer advised to stay in their homes.
According to Dave Stoddard, public information officer for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office says the lockdowns were initiated after they received information that a man was holding a family hostage and that he had explosives. The home where the man said he was located is near the schools and so the schools were locked down as a precaution.
When officers arrived at the location the man said he was, officers found no one at the address or any explosives. The sheriff’s office then responded to a second location and took a person of interest into custody. They have not identified who the person is or what their role in today’s incident is.
The investigation of the incident is still ongoing.
Original Story: The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says that all the schools in Sugar City are on lockdown at the moment as a precaution while the sheriff’s office deals with a separate incident in the city.
The sheriff’s office says there is no threat to the schools at this time but the buildings were locked down as a precaution. Residents in Sugar City are asked to stay indoors while they respond to the incident.
