Teton County voters approve sales tax projects

A total of 5,983 voters (45 percent of registered voters) turned out to decide 10 separate Special Purpose Excise Tax issues in Teton County, Wyoming Tuesday.

Voters approved funding for propositions 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10.

Voters approved re-allocation of previously collected funds to build a South Highway 89 pathway and South Park Boat Ramp underpass. The proposal will utilize $1.5 million in unspent funds used for the South Park Loop Road Pathway.

Voters approved a $17 million project to build a long term nursing home, hospice, rehabilitation, and memory care center. The project was sponsored by the Teton County Hospital District doing business as St. John’s Medical Center. The St. John’s Hospital Foundation said, “we’re eager to begin this new chapter of the Living Center; a chapter dedicated to keeping our families together by providing quality care close to home.” The Hospital District promised to meet half the total cost of the estimated $35 million project. Construction will begin in spring of 2020.

$6.8 million was also approved to renovate and upgrade Fire Station #1 in Jackson and acquire property and develop plans for Fire Station #3 at Hoback.

Voters approved $2.9 million to build 21 rental housing units in Jackson and $3.820 million to acquire land and build a new Central Wyoming College-Jackson Center.

$1.5 million was approved for pedestrian improvements and ADA upgrades within the Town of Jackson.

Voters approved $.2.4 million to renovate and repair the Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center.

The propositions that failed Tuesday related to improvements and expansion of START bus facilities and a Redmond/Hall affordable housing and rental project in Jackson.

The county will again begin collecting a sixth-cent sales tax in October until all of the approved projects are completed.
