FIRST ALERT OUTLOOK: Snow expected Wednesday
Snow and colder temperatures are expected to hit eastern Idaho and western Wyoming tonight into Wednesday morning.
While not unheard of, it is quite unusual to have a storm of this magnitude this late in the season. Typical highs this time of the year should rise to near 70 degrees, but afternoon temps on Wednesday will be lucky to hit 40 degrees in many locations. With such a powerful cold snap and an abundance of moisture, the conditions are just right for a late season snowstorm.
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect beginning tonight for the Sawtooths and all of Custer county along with portions of Blaine and Butte counties as well. Travel is discouraged in this part of the state due to significant snowfall and dangerous driving conditions.
Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for all of the high country bordering the Utah and Wyoming state lines. Several inches of snow can be expected above 7000 feet with 2-5 inches possible across some of the mountains valleys.
While no winter weather alerts are in effect for the Snake River Plain at this time, snow will still be possible for the I-15 corridor, so don’t let your guard down. Pockets of an inch or two will be possible for some neighborhoods especially up on the benches and foothills around Pocatello and east of the Snake River.
Late season storms like this are very tricky to forecast due to all the variables that come into play. While snow is likely, warm ground temperatures and the snowfall intensity will depict just how much accumulation will be possible in the end.
Keep up to date with the latest forecasts moving forward and take precautions now for any protection you may need for plants and vegetation.
