Local breast cancer survivor conquers Mt. Everest Base Camp

Lisa King is a nurse, wife, mother of two, and a breast cancer survivor.

“Two years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and then I finished all of my treatments about a year and a half ago. I had all of my treatments done at EIRMC [Eastern Idaho Medical Center]. I had my mammogram, my surgery, and my radiation. So thanks to EIRMC, they helped me conquer cancer,” King said.

And she recently conquered something else.

“And they also gave me the opportunity to conquer Everest Base Camp. The experience was one in a lifetime and it was an amazing adventure. My husband went with me and there were about six of us that were cancer survivors, but everyone there had some connection to cancer; whether it was a loved one who battled with it or lost the battle or a lot of health care providers,” King said.

Last month, she and her husband, Kevin, along with other cancer survivors around the country hiked from an elevation of 9,350-feet to 18,000-feet.

“Trekking in the Himalayas has always been on my bucket list, and then when this opportunity came up I jumped on it because it was to Everest Base Camp and it’s a place that I think not very many people in the world see and it’s an amazing place of the world,” King said.

The trip was organized by Radiating Hope, and Eastern Idaho Medical Center was proud to sponsor King on her trek.

“EIRMC chose me to represent all of southeastern Idaho and to take all of the prayer flags from the area. People dedicated a prayer flag to loved ones that were affected by cancer. And my husband and I took all of those 50 prayer flags and then they were hung by a Lama at Base Camp to stay there,” King said.
