Caribou County Sheriff warns of local scam

The Caribou County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scam hitting the area.

The Caribou County Sheriff, Kelly Wells, the department has been receiving multiple reports of callers attempting to get money from locals.

According to information from the sheriff’s office, the caller claims a family member has been arrested by the Pocatello Police Department and needs bail money.

If you receive a similar call, the Caribou County sheriff said do not believe it. Here’s what the sheriff suggests you do: do not give out any personal information and do not pay. The sheriff’s office said to ask the caller what agency they are with, then hang up and call that agency to ask an official if that information is true or not.

The sheriff’s office said this type of scam is designed to play on people’s emotions, causing them to rush into doing something to help a loved one. Officers warn not to fall for it.

The Caribou County Sheriff’s Office said the Pocatello Police Department has been notified their agency is being mentioned specifically in this scam.
