Short Term Rentals: What you need to know this summer
The eclipse is only a couple of months away and thousands of people will be flocking to eastern Idaho looking for a place to stay.
NASA has named Idaho Falls as one of the best viewing spots for the total solar eclipse and hotels are booking up fast. Many local homeowners are putting their places up for rent during the event, whether it’s a room, a basement, or even an entire house.
Alex Hart, of Stay for a Day Homes has made a business off of the short-term rental trend. “Short term rentals are by far a better value,” said Hart. The business owner oversees a handful of properties in eastern Idaho and he’s noticed more and more people joining in on the trend.
“There’s always going to be the typical business traveler where a hotel might be a better value for them,” said Hart.
For Idaho Falls, short term rentals are taxed, those taxes are allocated to the Idaho Falls Auditorium district. If you do plan to rent out your home, you will need to fill out a tax form that is on the district’s website.
