Boaters warned of dangerous river debris
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is warning boaters, rafters, and other river recreationists to watch out for dangerous, floating, woody debris in the lower Columbia River and Snake River. Because of high spring flows, an unusually large amount of floating wood has accumulated. The corps said that could range in size from small twigs to telephone pole-sized logs. Dam operators are implementing debris-spill operations to float large volume debris away from powerhouses. Boaters and other river-users are cautioned to watch for potentially hazardous debris. The USACE advised that wearing a life jacket or other personal flotation device is the best way to stay safe.
