Multiple crashes on I-15 causing concern

Multiple crashes have occurred along I-15 in the last two weeks, and everyone is trying to figure out why they are happening so frequently.

Idaho State Police attributes the accidents to construction and distracted driving. State Police have also stated they’ve seen a larger amount of people calling in to report bad drivers.

“Don’t let this summer be a tragedy for you and your family,” Sgt. Blake Higley, of the Idaho State Police, said.

Construction zones are an added risk. Decreased lanes, reduced speed and summer traffic are not a good mix.

“There’s going to be construction, though, because it is summer. And there’s going to be a lot of traffic, because it is summer. And we want everyone’s summer to be great, and an accident — delays in traffic because of an accident — doesn’t add to that great summer,” Higley said.

Speed is a huge concern. Local drivers avoid I-15 because of the unsafe driving.

“I don’t usually drive on I-15, but I do notice on the other highways that I drive on that even when the speed limit has been raised that nobody goes the speed limit. People fly right past me. And that’s pretty dangerous, in my opinion, just because it does create a hazard, going that fast. I don’t feel like there’s a need for people to go that fast,” said Kathryn.

“I avoid I-15 mainly because it’s just super busy and people drive crazy, you know? They need to slow down and just take a deep breath,” said Ryan.

Idaho State Police has created a new Twitter feed called ISP Eastern Idaho that it plans to use in real time to let drivers know of accidents and road closures.

State Police say the number of accidents being seen is pretty standard. We are in what AAA calls the “100 Deadliest Days” of summer, so state police will be alert for even more accidents that may occur during this time.
