Woman dedicates next four years to riding across country for good cause

Apollo, and his rider Meredith Cherry have big plans for the next four years. Cherry will alternate walking and riding Apollo for close to 10,000 miles as they venture across the United States. However, the ride is not just for fun, Cherry said the journey is for a good cause.

“I am on a 48 state cross country ride for domestic violence awareness,” commented Cherry, as she stood next to Apollo.

Cherry’s journey started this last January in California. Fast forward to July and the two had already made it to Pocatello, Idaho. Cherry said this adventure allows her to meet and educate people about domestic violence.

The topic hits close to home for Cherry, as she once was involved in a domestic violence situation herself.

“I was a victim of domestic violence, and when I left that relationship a couple of years ago, I was trying to decide what I wanted to do with my new found freedom,” Cherry recalled.

She said her new found freedom allowed her an opportunity to travel but she also wanted to combine her love for horses in what she did next.

“I have been a horse person for so many years but never had my own horse, so I bought Apollo and started getting us ready for this trip,” Cherry said.

Cherry said rain or shine they will continue to make their way across the United States. However, she said once it starts snowing, they will take a break for the winter.
