Retired policeman drowns in Bear River tubing accident

A 45-year-old Las Vegas, Nevada man drowned at around 5:10 p.m. Sunday in the Bear River near Red Point Campground, northeast of Preston. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said William M. Datthyn was on an inner tube in the river. According to witnesses, the tube deflated and he was swept into rapids and hit some rocks. The man was found in about 3 feet of water with his head submerged. Family members, including an off-duty Logan City Police Officer, brought him to shore and initiated CPR. When deputies arrived, CPR had been discontinued. Datthyn was taken to the Franklin County Medical Center. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the actual cause of death. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Datthyn was a retired New York City Police Officer. He was working for the Las Vegas County Sheriff’s Office as a court bailiff.
