Body of Blackfoot man found near Mackay

On Sunday, September 24 the Custer County Sheriff’s Office received a call from camper Russell Vickers who was camping in the Alder Creek Drainage about 5 miles south-southwest of Mackay.

Vickers reported his friend 56-year-old Kerry Poole from Blackfoot was long overdue returning to camp from a 4 wheeler ride.

Vickers reported Poole had a history of heart-related illness and was insulin dependent. He only had light clothing and had left his insulin in the truck at camp.

Custer County Sheriff Stuart Lumpkin activated the Custer County Search & Rescue, and Challis & South Custer Units begin a hasty search of the area for Poole, and Civil Air Patrol was contacted and supplied a plane to fly search patterns over the incident area.

By nightfall on September 24, search units reported no sign of Poole.

On September 25, ATV search and rescue teams were requested from Bonneville County and Butte County, and an A-Star helicopter from Reeder Flying Service out of Twin Falls was chartered to fly search patterns.

At 11 a.m., the body of Kerry Poole was located in Saw Mill Canyon about one and a half miles from his camp.

Sheriff Lumpkin said no official cause of death is being released at this time but will confirm no foul play contributed to Poole’s death.
