One person dead and one in custody after shooting in Chubbuck

One man was shot and killed in front of a Chubbuck convenience store Friday afternoon.

The Chubbuck Police Department responded to the Jackson’s Food Store on the 5000 block of Yellowstone Avenue, for the report of a shooting involving two adult males around 2:22 pm Friday.

Police say the victim was 37-year-old-Robert Phelps.

Police have arrested 38-year-old Anthony Leinweber and he is being held in the Bannock County Jail with a charge of murder.

According to an unnamed eyewitness who claims to know the two involved, the two people knew each other and were involved in a verbal argument. The victim then went into the store and the suspect got into a black mustang. When the victim came back out of the store, the suspect then confronted the victim, the two had another argument. The victim then got into a car and the suspect started firing into the victim’s window.

The Chubbuck Police say in a statement, “The investigation into this afternoons shooting in Chubbuck is still on going. Our investigators and patrol officers are conducting a thorough investigation with the assistance of the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, the Bannock County Prosecutors Office, the Idaho State Police, and the Bannock County Coroner’s Office. We appreciate their assistance this afternoon and their willingness to help us with this particular incident.
Investigations of this nature take a lot of time, and we understand the public’s desire to know what is happening in their city. Once we are able, we will release further information however at this early point in the investigation we are not able to release any further information.”
