N Carolina man killed by falling tree near Challis

A North Carolina man was killed while on a family hunting trip in the Salmon/Challis National Forest Wednesday.

Kenneth Lawrence Horton, 67, died after a tree fell on him as he slept nearby.

Custer County Search and Rescue was called to Buffalo Ridge at the top of Squaw Creek, about 11.5 miles west of Challis at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Rawhide Outfitters said one of their clients was injured.

Horton suffered a severe chest injury and was having trouble breathing when rescuers found him. Challis Ambulance Service and a Saint Luke’s Air Ambulance from Boise were sent to the scene.

At 3:29 p.m. the air ambulance crew reported that Horton died of his injuries.
