Menan voters to decide liquor by the drink proposal

Voters in Menan are being asked to approve a liquor by the drink ordinance.

The ballot question asks if the city should be allowed to authorize licenses for the retail sale of liquor by the drink at retail stores within city limits.

Voter approval would clear the way for the city to collect license fees and set regulations to control the sale of liquor by the drink.

Discussion of the issue began a year ago when Teton House restaurant owner Leo Hancock inquired about getting a license for his establishment.

City officials say Menan is authorized two liquor licenses by the state, but neither is being utilized.

A petition gained 20 percent of the city’s registered voters and placed the issue on the ballot.

If approved by voters, the Menan City Council will draft an ordinance outlining the rules and give Hancock the chance to apply for a license.

The measure requires a simple majority vote for approval.
