Caldwell man charged with attempted murder of his son

Dale Ivan Smith, of Caldwell, is being held in the Bonneville County Jail on $500,000 bond on charges of attempted murder, stalking, unlawful possession of destructive devices, and possession of a controlled substance.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the home of Bryan Smith at around 8 p.m. November 16 after he saw a suspicious vehicle near his home.

At the home, deputies found Dale Smith, Bryan Smith’s father, in the vehicle.

The elder Smith was found to be in violation of a protection order filed by his son.

The vehicle had fictitious license plates. Cash and weapons were also found, which indicated he may have intended to harm his son. Smith told officers he also had World War II grenades in his vehicle.

The Bonneville County bomb unit was able to recover the devices and secure them.

Dale Smith was arrested for felony stalking at that time and booked into jail.

A detective later determined Dale Smith had a plan to kill Bryan Smith.

He is scheduled to appear in 7th District Court for a preliminary hearing on the charges December 1st.
