The Nutcracker to be performed live with Eugene Ballet and IF Symphony

The Nutcracker Ballet performed by the Eugene Ballet and Idaho Falls Symphony will be showing for one night only: Thursday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Idaho Falls Civic Auditorium.

The orchestra of 42 musicians will only have two rehearsals together and then only one rehearsal with the ballet company before performing for an audience.

However, you are in for an extraordinary treat said Dr. Thomas Heuser, Music Director of the Idaho Falls Symphony

“Hearing a live performance of The Nutcracker will change your life,” Heuser said. “Not only does the visual spectacle of the dancing take your breath away, but, as only live music can do, listeners experience a kind of magic that brings the story to life. The experience is profound, which is why the Eugene Ballet loves coming back to Idaho Falls. We give them the unique chance to perform with live orchestra.”

Only a few of the Oregon-based Eugene Ballet’s performances on their an annual Nutcracker tour will feature a live orchestra, and Idaho Falls is one of those locations.

Dancing alongside the Eugene Ballet will be local dancers of all ages, from the youngest baby mice to groups of elegant dinner guests who were selected by audition.

No performance of the Nutcracker Ballet would be complete without special effects, and the Symphony’s production does not disappoint Heuser said.

The battle scene between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King includes canon shots and flashy pyrotechnics. The Waltz of the Snowflakes is danced beneath the falling snow, with the voices of a heavenly choir provided by the Bonneville High School Women’s Choir under the direction of Steve Dresen. And of course, at the stroke of midnight, Clara’s Christmas tree grows larger than life as the Nutcracker figurine comes suddenly to life. The costumes and sets were created by former Disney designers.

Maestro Heuser will provide a Pre-Concert Discussion starting at 6:30 p.m. in the adjacent Little Theater.
