Holiday pets taken to shelters

Pets are a popular gift during the holiday season but a lot of times owners are unprepared.

The Idaho Falls Animal Shelter says they see a large number of drop-offs and owner surrenders in January.

People who were unprepared for the responsibility of a young animal or those with older animals who may not want to deal with that stress during the holiday season.

They say getting someone a pet as a present isn’t the best idea…But there are alternatives.

“Our recommendation is if you want to do that we can do a gift certificate or something like that and they can pick out their own pet and hopefully it will work,” says Irene Brown, Animal Services Manager.

They also say that you can get supplies needed for pets instead of getting an actual animal. It’s important to remember pets require patience and will need to be trained.
