Avalanche danger high throughout the region
The Sawtooth Avalanche Center in Ketchum has issued a back country avalanche warning for Camas, Elmore, Blaine and Custer counties.
The warning includes the Sawtooth, Soldier, Smoky, White Cloud, Boulder and Pioneer Mountains.
The avalanche danger in those areas is “high” due to a combination of heavy snow and wind that are overloading a weak snowpack. As a result, the avalanche center said widespread avalanche activity will occur.
Avalanche danger is also reported as “high” in the Gallatin and Bridger Teton region and the mountains near Logan, Utah near the Idaho border.
Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. The center said avalanches may run long distances into flat areas and could run into mature forests. Snowmobilers and skiers are advised to stay away from slopes steeper than about 30 degrees.
