One killed in avalanche in Fremont County identified

UPDATE: 1/22/18 10:35 a.m. The victim of a Saturday avalanche has been identified as John Moe, 46, of Missoula, Montana.

Fremont County Sheriff Len Humphries warned that back-country conditions remain very “considerable” at this time.

One man is dead after an avalanche in Fremont County Saturday afternoon.

The 911 call came into Fremont County dispatch around 2:45 p.m. on Saturday saying there had been an avalanche.

It happened just east of Reas Peak in Island Park. There was a snowmobile rider buried in the snow. Fremont County Search and Rescue, Fremont County Sheriff’s deputies and life flight were all called in. Members of the group who were with the missing rider found his body after about 40 minutes.

The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

Fremont County Search and Rescue and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone that backcountry avalanche conditions are extremely dangerous.
