BHS students perform national anthem at Utah Jazz game

From the Bonneville Hive to Melaleuca Field to the Vivint Smarthome Arena in Salt Lake City.

Four Bonneville High School seniors in the choral group Chanteuse sang the national anthem on Friday, Feb. 9 at the NBA Utah Jazz basketball game.

“It was really intimidating, like ‘I’m gonna throw up’ type of intimidating,” said Fayth Waters who sings soprano 1.The group consisting of Waters, soprano 2 Lauren Nix, alto 1 Sophie Larsen and alto 2 Olivia Elliott is used to singing for high school sporting events and even at a few Chukars games this past summer, but their audience grew tremendously Friday night when they sang for about 18,306 people.

“I was a little nervous,” said Elliot, “but when they turned the spotlight on us, I was very nervous.”

As for Larsen, she said it felt like a normal performance but just with a camera in her face.

This is the first time the history of the group Chanteuse for the girls to sing at a major event like this. The group auditioned for Utah Jazz officials via a taped recording back in September.

“We prepared for that moment for over a year and a half,” said Nix. “We started last year as just a group of four friends singing for fun and have performed the national anthem so many times for lots of different people.”

The seniors say all their 7:30 a.m. practices, performances and hard work became well worth it when they heard they were selected to perform.

“It took a lot of practice and stress,” said Waters, “but it totally paid off.”
