Student aims to get comic book published

One local student is hoping to turn his passion into publication.

“Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always loved like Spiderman and, like, superheroes,” Brice Drake, senior at Firth High School, said. “And I’ve been drawing my whole life and read like tons of books on it.”

Brice Drake’s senior project has been in the works for over a year. He decided to do it on a comic book series he created called, “The Contemptible Clique.” It’s about group of villains working together.

“[The characters are] Triple M, Propellor, Toilet Troll and Exploding Eagle,” Drake said. “And so they team up because this one, Triple M, he used to be a little person.”

Drake said he began drawing comics in elementary school. Firth High School doesn’t have an art department, so he’s taught himself with books and YouTube tutorials.

“If you see here like on the first one, the art, I think it’s okay, but it gets like way better in the second one and it’s even better in the third one,” Drake said. “So I like to see my own improvement. Like, I’ve never improved faster than when I started working on this, so I like to see my own improvement ramp up.”

So far, he has completed two issues and is working on a third. He says writing about villains allows more chances for comedy. He plans to continue this in college by majoring in English and minoring in Art.

“I like telling stories,” he said. “I like it when a story like unfolds the exact way you want. And, I think it’s like, I write the story to be kind of funny, so I really like when people read it and I can see them laughing and stuff. It makes me feel like really happy.”

Brice is hoping to get his comics printed. He created a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to do so. If you wish to donate, you can do so here.
