Idaho Falls man charged after hit and run

A 19-year-old Idaho Falls man has been charged after striking a crossing guard then leaving the scene of the accident near Bonneville High School Monday.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said Austyn Arends was driving a red Suburban that struck the guard while he was working at Honeybee Lane at around 3:58 p.m.

Deputies used video surveillance and witness information to locate the driver Monday night. Arends was charged with felony leaving the scene of an injury accident, misdemeanor reckless driving and misdemeanor failure to purchase a driver’s license.

The crossing guard sustained injuries and was treated and released at a local medical facility. The guard, who was not identified, was protecting students from Rocky Mountain Middle School.
