Chubbuck looks at plans for indoor aquatic center

The city of Chubbuck could be getting an indoor aquatic center.

Right now, the city is working with a Utah architecture company on a feasibility study for the center. The city is looking at possible locations, doing interest surveys from residents and getting feedback from the community.

The indoor center could have features like a lazy river, slides, a competition pool for swim teams, maybe even a rock climbing wall.

City councilwoman, Melanie Evans, is spearheading the project and said she would like to see some other additions included like maybe a senior center or after school programs.

She said what the aquatic center includes and what is involved would be based on what the public wants and the needs of the public. But she said the city is looking at this project as a sort of hub for the city – an opportunity for more than just a recreational center.

“I think a lot of people when they hear about this, they think about the recreation and oh it’s somewhere to go do some fun physical activity with my family but we are also looking at a whole other side of it which would be a community center which would have gathering places for events, for classes, for all sorts of things so that we can have positive things going on for all different age groups,” Evans said.

There will be an open house for the public on the project on March 15 at 6 p.m. at Chubbuck City Hall. The architects and city council members will be there to talk about the project and answer any questions.

Evans said once the feasibility study is done and they gauge if it’s possible to do, and if there’s enough public interest, then they will look at steps to move forward with it.
