Be prepared for flooding

With all the rain and run off forecast for this weekend, there are several flood watches and advisories in effect for our area.

Many local rivers and creeks are at near flood stage, and this weekend’s storms could push that water over the banks.

In Inkom, some local residents are taking precautions to make sure the creeks and drainage systems are cleaned out to avoid any problems.

They say they have been here before and know what to expect.

“I’ve lived here now for 30 years, and I’ve seen what it does” said Inkom Mayor Joel Jolley. “A lot of people here just kind of watch and you can tell from the south of town what’s happening. It’s just kind of our gauge. And our maintenance people on a daily basis go and check the river height and see what the difference is.”

Here are a few things that you should do if there is a flood:

Stay informed. Keep an ion local forecast and weather reports. Be prepared. Have a plan for flood fighting and a go kit with essential needs and documents. Have a family communication plan. Make sure you know how to contact each other in an emergency. Get to know your neighbors. If you need to fight a flood, a team effort is more productive.

If you need help with preparations, you can call 9-1-1, and they will put you in touch with city and county departments that can help with sand bags or offer other emergency assistance.
