Non-profit establishes “Giving Cupboard” in Jefferson County

The Jefferson County Community Food Bank will take on a new name and new management.

The food bank, which serves about 60 families each month, will soon be known as the “Giving Cupboard” and operated by a non-profit organization.

Jefferson County Clerk Colleen Poole said the Giving Cupboard will have access to grants and programs currently not available to the county-operated food bank. The county has operated the food bank for more than 20 years and is currently the only county-owned food bank in the state.

“The food bank has been a labor of love for the Social Services Directors and the entire Clerk’s office for many years,” said Poole. “However, there are several programs, including the Idaho Food Bank that we cannot use because we are a county.”

The food bank currently operates in rented space at the Rigby City Library one day per month and relies solely on private donations. The facility does not have access to refrigeration.

Members of the community stepped up to form the new non-profit. Jefferson County will transfer its management to the new group over the next few weeks.
