US 20 back open following a closure Monday afternoon
UPDATE 7:23 PM: Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance near 35th E. and 113th N. at 12:40 p.m. Monday.
Deputies found that a man and a woman had been in an altercation resulting in the man barricading himself inside the home.
Officials were told the man had access to firearms and refused to come out.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s SWAT team, negotiator’s, as well as an Idaho Falls Ambulance was called to the scene.
A perimeter was quickly set up for safety concerns, including shutting down US Highway 20.
Deputies made limited contact with the man inside the home and negotiated for some time.
After communication had stopped, SWAT team members entered the home and found the man had died of self-inflicted wounds.
The Tri-County Sheriff’s Association is helping assist in the investigation.
UPDATE 7:10 PM: The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the standoff with the man barricading himself inside a home is over.
113th N is still blocked but other roads are open.
Updated 6:55 PM:
Idaho State Police reports US 20 is now open in both directions. We’re still waiting to hear an update from police on the man who barricaded himself in a home in Ucon.
UPDATE 6:30 pm:
A 10-mile stretch of US 20 remains closed because of a man who has barricaded himself in a home near Ucon.
The road closure is between the Ucon Exit (exit 325) and the Menan-Lorenzo exit (exit 315). Traffic is being redirected onto the old Yellowstone Highway through Rigby or onto the Menan Highway.
Police are not saying why the man is wanted, but believe he is armed in the home.
The home is located on 113th North in Ucon, which runs next to US 20.
SWAT team members and negotiators are trying to get the man to come out peaceably.
Police surrounded the home at about 1 p.m. Monday and they closed the highway shortly after.
The road closure what only between the County Line Road exit and Ucon for most of the afternoon until about 5:15 p.m.
Traffic was backed up on both ends of the closure for miles. Police decided to close Highway 20 farther east at the Menan-Lorenzo exit because many cars and pickups were cutting through the median to turn around.
People reported the backup added 30 to 45 minutes to their trip.
UPDATE 5:20 p.m.: Idaho Transportation Department has shut down US 20 from mile marker 325 (Menan-Lorenzo exit) to 315 (Ucon exit).
