Domestic violence: help is just a phone call away

Hundreds of people were inconvenienced yesterday by a big traffic snarl on Highway 20.

Deputies tell us it all started as domestic violence incident.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone.

You may be the victim or the aggressor, but help is always a phone call away.

“It’s ok to reach out for help,” said Teena McBride, Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center Executive Director. “People are always going to do things that make us angry, people are going to do things that hurt us, and when I talk about hurting iit can be deciding to no longer be in a relationship.”

If you are in a violent situation here’s what you can do:

Diffuse the situation. Leave. Go for a walk or to a friends house to ‘cool down.’ Develop a plan. Find a safe place. Have your phone with you at all times with numbers you can for help. Teach your children how to get help and that violence is never the answer.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse, you can reach out to the Idaho Falls Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center 24-hours a day at 208-235-2412.
