Ashton plans active shooter drill

Ashton residents should not be alarmed if they see or hear a lot of emergency sirens early Saturday afternoon.

In cooperation with Fremont County Emergency Services, the North Fremont Fire District, Fremont County EMS, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and Ashton Police will conduct an active shooter training event at the Ashton LDS Stake Center at 673 N. 2nd Street.

In the wake of recent shooting incidents across the country, City Clerk Cathy Stegelmeier said local clergy began to raise questions about how officials would respond to such an event in Ashton.

Fremont County EMS Director Bob Foster has been meeting with local clergy and their congregations to explain emergency procedures. As part of that effort, officials then decided to stage a full-out exercise.

The exact time of the event is not being announced ahead of time, but people can expect a good deal of police activity, some road closures near the stake center and even an emergency helicopter.
