Officer-involved shooting ruled justified
Bonneville County Prosecutor Daniel Clark has determined that an officer-involved shooting incident in Pocatello last November was justified.
The Power County Prosecutor’s Office asked Clark to review the incident. It was investigated by the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force.
Power County Prosecutor Anson Call said Clark concluded a female juvenile driver made herself a direct threat to law enforcement officers.
According to the investigation, Power County deputies attempted to pull over a Chevrolet Tahoe that had been reported stolen from Burley on Interstate 86 between the American Falls exits.
As officers approached, the female driver sped away. Several efforts were made to pull over the vehicle on I-86, East County Road and U.S. 30 at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour.
While an Idaho State Police Trooper was setting up spike strips to stop the car, a Deputy saw the Tahoe drive directly toward him.
The trooper fired seven shots at the driver while moving out of the path of the car.
The driver and another female passenger were ultimately pulled over and arrested in Pocatello.
Clark determined the driver demonstrated aggressive hostility to the officers and refused to comply with lawful orders designed to defuse the situation.
