Citizens join Peace Officer Memorial

A large crowd was on hand at the Bonneville County Courthouse Tuesday night as the Idaho Falls Fire Department Pipe and Drum Corps opened a National Peace Officer Memorial candlelight vigil.

The day is set aside to honor law enforcement heroes who have lost their lives in service to their communities. The ceremony included a roll call of Idaho’s fallen peace officers.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has its own officers included in that call. Deputy Neil Simpkins was killed in the line of duty in 1927. Deputy Harry Merrill was killed in the line of duty in 1938. And K-9 Officer “Rik” was killed in the line of duty in 2002.
